Finland consistently ranks among the top countries in the world for education outcomes — yet Finnish children don't start formal schooling until age seven, and their early years are built almost entirely around play. At Kipinä Nursery, we've built our curriculum around this same philosophy, adapted for our community here in Al Bateen, Abu Dhabi.
The Finnish early years model is built on a simple but powerful idea: young children learn best through play, not pressure. Rather than drilling letters and numbers, children are given time and space to explore, question, build, imagine and interact — with a trusted adult nearby to guide, not direct.
In our classrooms, you'll see children leading their own learning — choosing between a reading corner, a building area or outdoor play — while our teachers observe, join in and gently extend each activity. Our low child-to-teacher ratio means every child gets individual attention, even within a play-based structure.
We also place a strong emphasis on outdoor time, sensory play and unstructured exploration — all hallmarks of the Finnish model — while adapting the day to suit children as young as 2 months through to 4 years old.
Children who grow up with this approach tend to enter formal schooling with strong emotional regulation, genuine curiosity and a love of learning — rather than early academic pressure that can fade over time. Our goal isn't to make children look advanced on paper; it's to raise confident, curious, well-rounded individuals.
Curious to see the Finnish approach in action? We'd love to welcome you for a tour of our nursery and show you exactly how play, curiosity and care come together every day.
