One of the most common questions we hear from parents in Al Bateen and across Abu Dhabi is: "How do I know if my child is ready for nursery?" It's a big decision, and it's natural to feel unsure. The good news is that nursery readiness has very little to do with academics and everything to do with everyday skills and curiosity.
If your child watches other children at the park with interest, tries to join their games, or mimics what they see other kids doing, that's a strong sign they're ready to enjoy being part of a group.
Your child doesn't need to be fully independent, but small steps matter — feeding themselves with a spoon, attempting to remove their shoes, or drinking from an open cup. These little wins build the confidence needed for a new environment.
If your child can be left with a grandparent, relative or babysitter for a short period without prolonged distress, they are developing the emotional security needed to separate from you during the nursery day.
Children thrive on predictability. If your little one already enjoys a bedtime or mealtime routine, and shows interest in songs, story time or simple games with others, they're likely to settle well into a nursery day.
This doesn't require full sentences. Pointing, gesturing, single words or simple phrases like "more" or "help" are enough for trained teachers to understand and respond to your child's needs.
There is no single "right age" — some children show these signs at 12 months, others closer to 2 years. At Kipinä Nursery, we welcome children from as young as 2 months, and our experienced teachers work with each child at their own pace, in small groups with a low child-to-teacher ratio.
If you're still unsure, the best next step is simply to come and see our environment for yourself. Book a tour with us and we'll happily talk through your child's individual readiness together.
